Topping our picks of best Colorado shows this week are Justin Timberlake, Futurebirds, Murder by Death and more. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our
4) Railroad Earth — Fillmore Auditorium, Jan. 17-18
Days after the release of the band’s seventh studio album, Railroad Earth will celebrate with two nights at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium. Railroad Earth’s Americana and bluegrass sound has found a passionate fan base in Colorado, where both sounds — along with jam music — are wildly popular. Mixing these genres is the perfect cocktail for music fans in the state, which explains the band’s many multinight runs and this summer’s headlining show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The band performs at the Fillmore on Jan. 17-18. ($39.50-$55.50, livenation.com)
3) Futurebirds — Bluebird Theater, Jan. 18
For a band that brings a personalized and lonely touch to Southern indie-rock, Futurebirds likes to turn up its live shows in terms of volume and energy. And even among the excitement, the band is able to make four-part harmonies soar as far as the signature pedal-steel guitar. Just off the release of the warmly received “Baba Yaga,” Futurebirds returns to Denver to the Bluebird Theater on Jan. 18. While singing about traditional Americana themes such as cowboys and Virginia Slims, the band stays progressive in its instrumentation, dipping it in a bit of reverb, and executing sometimes unexpected chord progressions. ($16-$20, bluebirdtheater.net)
2) Murder by Death — Stanley Hotel, Jan. 17-19
It’s the match made in heaven, or dare we say it, hell. Sorry we had to do it. Murder by Death is playing three shows at the hunted Stanley Hotel in Estes Park this weekend on Jan. 17, 18 and 19. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them” the band will play the entire album plus other songs. This is a genius idea, really — one that we’re surprised hasn’t been thought of before.
1) Justin Timberlake — Pepsi Center, Jan. 22
Coming off of a 2013 that saw two album releases and one of the highest grossing tours of 2013, Justin Timberlake should be feeling pretty good at his Pepsi Center show on Jan. 22. With more than 20 new tracks to debut in Denver, expect Timberlake to pull out all the punches in what is hopefully a lengthy concert. The year of Timberlake isn’t quite over yet.
