In the days leading up to the of Marcus Gardley’s ” ” producing partner Tina Walls did her part to ensure there’d be plenty of positive buzz for the production commissioned by the .
First came a reception at the where Walls and Charleszine “Terry” Nelson, the library’s special-collection and community-resource manager, gave a couple hundred theater-lovers the opportunity to share conversation — and refreshments — with Gardley, director Chay Yew and several members of the cast.
Then, Walls, who is also president of the , arranged a fundraiser where members of The Links and their friends would get to see the final dress rehearsal before the play began a four-week run in the Space Theatre at the .
“Black Odyssey” is the story of Ulysses Lincoln, a Gulf War veteran returning to Harlem, and is a production in which “Classic Greek characters and themes meet African American culture in (a) twist on Homer’s ‘The Odyssey,’ ” according to the program notes.
Along with Walls, Allison and Jim Shetter, Jim Steinberg and Lori Watson, are the producing partners. Steinberg is also the 2014 Citizen of the Arts and will be honored at a dinner on Jan. 31. The play will close Feb. 16.
