In the run-up to Sunday’s Super Bowl match-up, is proudly doing its part to support the Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks — namely by banning all Seattle artists from its airwaves until Denver emerges victorious on Feb. 2.
“This is a crucial prep week for the Broncos and I figured that Denver fans want to get all their positive mojo going in that direction,” said Mike Casey, the morning show host of 99.5 The Mountain, in a press release today. “So how could I, in good conscience and good mojo, saturate the Mountain airwaves with Seahawk fan-bands like Heart, Pearl Jam, Hendrix and Nirvana this week?? No way!”
We assume Casey’s also aware of the other artists from the Rainy City of Perpetual Sadness, such as , ’90s grunge-lite posers Candlebox, Chicago trash-dumper (and current Seattle resident) , whiny tissue-popsters the Head and the Heart, and otherwise worthy acts like Band of Horses, Brandi Carlile, the Gits, Sir Mix-A-Lot and Telekinesis.
The ban, which has the full support of program director Sam Hill, will most notably impact the station’s “’90s at 9” show — since that was the last decade the city produced anything resembling a music scene. It may also affect the “5 O’Clock Barrel of Monkeys” show, in which listeners link song requests from last letter to first letter. (Couldn’t hurt to bone up on your ).
We also admire the blue-and-orange fortitude afternoon host Dan Mitchell, who’s going so far as to swear off anything with a Seattle connection.
“No Starbucks, no Microsoft, no ‘Frasier’ re-runs and here at work… No Seattle rock!” he said.
