Q: My spouse and I have been kicking around dropping cable TV for some time now, and I’ve been using your suggestions to research that subject. It now has me wondering if there might be some way to stop paying Comcast for the Internet access?

—Jerry Lyons

A: FreedomPop’s is relatively low-cost, featuring one gigabyte of data for free and paid plans starting at $10 a month. Unfortunately, the company’s service relies on Sprint’s mobile network, which ranks last in the Denver area in coverage and reliability. FreedomPop could be an option after Sprint launches the faster 4G LTE service in Denver, which is expected soon. A better alternative might be to subscribe to T-Mobile’s unlimited data plan and use your smartphone as a mobile hotspot at home to share the connection with your desktop computer and other devices. Be sure to check T-Mobile’s coverage in your home before canceling Comcast. AT&T and Verizon no longer offer unlimited Internet data, which is key if you want to use mobile broadband as your primary connection to the Web.
