Over the past month, we asked Denver Post readers and our staff to help us come up with a list of people in Colorado who should be recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments or ideas that either occurred or came to fruition in 2013.

Nonprofits

WINNER:

Kathy Underhill, founding executive director of
, a nonprofit organization established in 2009 to end hunger in Colorado. In 2013, Underhill, a nationally recognized leader in the fight to eradicate hunger, launched a new advocacy project called , a photo exhibit aimed at shedding light on hunger in the Denver metro area. She has been a champion of retaining food stamp benefits as part of the federal farm bill.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

First United Presbyterian Church in Loveland, for its work during the Colorado floods. “This church stepped up during the flood in a way that made you wanna cry,” . “It opened a supply depot, stocked it, staffed it.” From a September story in The Post: “The church, converted into a supply center, was packed with donated necessities free for the taking — coats, shoes, toys, bottled water, bags of banana peppers and red potatoes.” The music director was deputized as the supply chief.
