A “destination spa” — the difference is in its focus on helping guests develop healthy habits — Travaasa also calls itself “experiential.” That translates into getting guests outside their comfort zones (riding a mechanical bull, traversing a slackline) — and back in them again through a tempting array of spa treatments.

The setting — nestled in the oaks high on a hill overlooking the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve — is secluded, the staff goes above and beyond to ensure guest contentment, and the food is on par with the best restaurants in Austin, or anywhere, really.

What makes it special: The Equine Experience is a session with a horse that will suss out your nonverbal cues and then help you communicate better. They’re people-whisperers, and famous for making folks feel what they’re not saying — seriously warm-and-fuzzy biofeedback.

Try this treatment: As the name suggests, the Hill Country Honeybee Massage and Body Treatment ($195, 80 minutes) uses warm, organic honey, as well as ginger oils and a mask of royal jelly. Feel-good bonus: A portion of the fee goes to the Texas Beekeepers Association.

Rates: If you stay at Travaasa, the all-inclusive rate starts at $475 per person, per night, which includes most activities (some, like trail riding, cost extra), three meals daily, most gratuities and a $125 daily resort credit good toward spa treatments. Lodging-only starts at $250 per night.

Get there: Travaasa sits about a half hour northwest of downtown Austin via Texas 1 and Farm to Market Route 2222.
