Stepping from the street into this Middle Eastern-style spa scented with lavender and coriander is like stepping into another world, instantly shifting the senses to relax mode.

What makes it special: Instead of flip-flops and a robe, you’re handed a pair of soft, colorful Moroccan slippers and a sarong, and many of the treatments are performed while you recline on what feels like a royal throne, on Jerusalem gold marble. Afterward, sink back into velvety cushions and sip just-brewed tea and snack on sweet, crumbly cakes. This is a unique experience, and the atmosphere is exquisite.

Try this treatment: All of the options — two kinds of massage and facials — include the half hour of hammam (steam) and gommage (exfoliation with loofah and black Moroccan soap, which leaves you silky soft from oils); be prepared to be rinsed after with bracingly cold water. Deep-tissue massages start at 15 minutes ($115) but it’s well worth it to spring for more time. Facials (starting at $225) use Moroccan oils and a light touch; you can add a clay mask treatment for $45.

Rates: This is a day spa, so the cost is for treatments only.

Get there: Miraj sits in the South Granville district of Vancouver, easily accessible from downtown.
