Interview with Janet Lombardi, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: As a new high school graduate, I was going to begin my college career as a graphic artist. I fell upon an opportunity one day visiting a beauty school. It looked fun and I dabbled in styling hair for friends and family as a child. It never occurred to me that this was my calling. After 45 years of being a stylist, I still enjoy it very much.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: The longevity of our salon. Salons/spas/independents open on average of 50-plus per month across the country and close at a quicker rate, usually because the client is more cautious of their discretionary spending. The downturn of the economy can bring on the demanded value-for-money services that meet the latest hair salon trends.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: There isn’t just one thing I like about my industry, there are many. It is an instant gratification when your clients have that great smile and look of confidence that we can give them with a new haircut and/or color. We help people feel better about themselves. It is an ever changing industry, which makes learning the new trends fun and interesting. We are introduced to new products and techniques to better our trade constantly. And the relationships we have made with our clients are priceless.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: We compete with “over the counter” products that are severely overrated. The ingredients are not conducive in keeping the hair shiny and healthy after a professional service. And there are more than 250,000 salons in the U.S. and around a million people working in this industry. Competition is fierce, and we need to keep one step ahead always.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: It is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. This industry still sees about $42 billion in revenue even in a downturned economy. People need to keep their jobs, look their best for interviews, feel confident and have their edge to stay ahead of their game.
