El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa has been accused of misbehavior and ethical violations that include sex with subordinates, abusive treatment of employees, and dismantling the oversight of his office’s budget.

The accusations, highlighted in an by The Gazette last Friday, were made by three of Maketa’s commanders. Their complaint included text and e-mail messages between Maketa and three female employees that discussed sexual relationships dating back to 2008.

In an published over the weekend, The Gazette called for Maketa, whose term ends after November’s election, to resign, while The Denver Post said in an on Tuesday that the sheriff’s reputation is too damaged for him to effectively continue serving.
