An uncle and his nephew who drowned during a Monday fishing trip at the Poudre River have been identified.

They were 38-year-old Jose Antonio Terrel Pena of Evans, and 14-year-old Christopher Alania of Greeley, according to a news release from the Larimer County coroner. Both lived in the Greeley area.

. His uncle, Pena, jumped into the water to rescue him, according to a report from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The two were swept away by the water, which was at flood stage and full of snow melt.

People along the river were able to pull the uncle out of the water about two miles downstream. He was unconscious, and rescuers attempted CPR. He died after being airlifted to a hospital, the sheriff’s department reported.

Three hours after the search began, a kayaker found Alania’s body about eight miles downstream.

Autopsies determined Pena died of accidental drowning, and Alania died of accidental drowning and blunt force trauma, the coroner reported.
