To date, there have been 40 unconfirmed reports of tornado touchdowns statewide, which, if confirmed, would far surpass the number of tornadoes that hit the state last year, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Official tornado confirmations are not compiled until later in the year, the weather service said.

Wednesday night, there were unconfirmed reports that two tornadoes touched down in Washington County that accompanied .

“This is the heart of it now,” said Eric Thaler, a meteorologist with the weather service. “We are kind of getting out of the prime time for tornados.”

Tornadoes are not officially counted until an investigation by the weather service is complete, Thaler said.

Colorado typically averages 53 tornadoes each year, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. June is typically the most active tornado month in Colorado, when about 18 touch down.

Colorado usually ranks seventh among states in total number of tornadoes each year, the weather service said.

There were 26 tornadoes in Colorado in 2013, according to data .
