In response to residents who wanted to keep dwarf goats on their property, the Wheat Ridge city council voted 8-0 Monday to fold dwarf goats into the small animal and poultry code.
Residents can now own up to three dwarf goats as long as they have 130 square feet of backyard space per-animal.
Normal goats weigh around 150 pounds and dwarf goats are between 40 and 60 pounds. Both had been classified as large animals — meaning a property owner had to have at least 9,000 square feet of property to own one.
“We tried to make this as simple as possible,” said Ken Johnstone, the city’s community development director. “It’s just a flat three dwarf goats and no permits are required.”
People can begin housing the animals on Aug. 1.
