Nearly 60 residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the Black Forest fire in June 2013 have filed suit against the fire protection district, El Paso County and the state of Colorado, alleging negligence in the handling of the blaze.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court on Aug. 19, seeks $1 million for each of the households.
Lead plaintiff Darrell Fortner said he filed the lawsuit “because there are too many unanswered questions.”
Fortner lost his home, work equipment and four German shepherds in the fire.
