Gov. John Hickenlooper will announce Colorado’s newest poet laureate Tuesday at a ceremony on the steps of the capitol building.

“Colorado’s poet laureate serves a four-year term and acts as an active advocate for poetry, literacy and literature by participating in readings and other events at venues such as schools, libraries and literary festivals throughout the state,” the governor’s office said in a press release.
The new appointee will replace current laureate David Mason, a Colorado College professor, as the state’s top poet.
Mason is also co-director of the college’s creative writing program and the author of several collections of verse, including “Ludlow,” which focuses on the 1914 Ludlow Massacre in southern Colorado. The professor wrote a as part of his role as laureate.
