LONGMONT — From the depths of a trash can, to a Humane Society shelter to a new home with some animal lovers; it’s been a heck of a week for Purdy the parakeet.
Purdy, a light blue and black parakeet of unknown sex, ended up at the Longmont Humane Society last week after a student at Frederick High School, hearing the bird’s calls, plucked it from a hallway trash can at the school.
The school’s resource officer handed off the bird to the shelter, where it remained, recovering from whatever lead it to the trash bin, for a few days until it became available for adoption Tuesday.
Longmont’s Mark and Cindy Payler, owners of two dogs and one cat, were the first people at the shelter for adoption hours Tuesday to meet Purdy, beating out several other eager potential parakeet rescuers, they said.
By Tuesday afternoon, Purdy — who the Paylers described as a “rock star” after reading about his plight in the Times-Call — was in a new cage, with new toys at the couple’s north Longmont residence.
“Right now he’s just hanging out, checking things out, not really sure about life in the new home just yet,” Mark Payler said Tuesday.
“He has tweeted once since we got here,” Cindy Payler added. “I think he’s a little shy right now. Once he gets more comfortable, he’ll be talking more.”
