Police in Colorado Springs say they arrested two people Friday morning after they were caught in a school zone with an illegally possessed handgun and methamphetamine.

Martin Hernandez Vargas, 55, and his passenger, Oscar Acosta-Mendosa, 55, were both taken into custody, police said.

About 8 a.m., an officer spotted the two in a car with misused license plates on the 1500 block of Verde Drive near Pikes Peak Elementary, police said. During a traffic stop, the officer found the driver, Vargas, was driving without a license and insurance and that the vehicle’s registration was expired.

“During a patdown search of the driver, officers recovered a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and there was residue in the pipe,” police said.

Police said they found a 9mm handgun belonging to Acosta-Mendosa, who was barred from having the gun.
