In a broadening federal investigation of Colorado Springs’ housing division, auditors said a former city employee fraudulently altered grant reports and lied to meet federal spending deadlines.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Inspector General’s report, made public Thursday, largely mimicked findings of a city audit released this year that detailed poor oversight, mismanagement of funds and altered paperwork in the division.

Sparked by a citizen complaint Feb. 6, the findings of the Inspector General’s report led to the order for two in-depth audits planned for the coming months. Those audits will examine the city’s management of two multimillion-dollar HUD grant programs and could lead to funds being rescinded.

The federal report had several recommendations.
