Add another abortion spot to the oppressive political advertising hitting Colorado television screens.
Once reserved for the U.S. Senate race, the abortion and birth control issue is becoming prominent in the governor’s race with a new million-dollar ad attacking Republican candidate Bob Beauprez.
“This is the race that matters,” the ad starts, featuring footage of women running in mountain terrain. “The one Colorado women can’t afford to lose. We can’t give Bob Beauprez the power to be governor.”
Making Colorado Great — an outside group funded by the Democratic Governors Association — began airing the 30-second ad Thursday in the Denver and Colorado Springs television markets, giving it wide exposure just days before ballots hit voter’s mailboxes.
The ad goes on to cite Beauprez’s previous remarks opposing abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, and opposing government funding of Planned Parenthood.
It comes after Beauprez in the Denver Post debate saying IUDs cause abortions.
The group’s spokesman Michael Huttner called it a “seven-figure” ad buy, but wouldn’t disclose the exact amount spent. The abortion spot is not airing in the Grand Junction and Western Slope region, where the group is continuing to feature the banking attack ad.
Beauprez . He said he opposes this year’s personhood ballot initiative, though still supports a similar federal effort.
