ARVADA — It was one of those nights in Colorado high school football. “It was weird,” Denver South coach Tony Lindsay said. “We just wanted to win and get out of here with the win.”

His Rebels did, taking a 32-14 decision of Golden on Thursday night in the Class 4A Mountain League.

However, in front of a sparse crowd at the North Area Athletic Complex, oddities abounded.

For instance, Denver South, No. 5 in the Associated Press media poll, moved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league, but had only 21 fans in the stands at kickoff.

For another, the game began in a driving rainstorm and ended in dryer conditions.

There were seemingly as many flags in the nearly three-hour affair that there are in a Veterans parade. “I know,” Lindsay said. “But we’re getting some kids back and we’re where we want to be.”

Lindsay’s team, which loaded up in nonleague against 5A’s Eaglecrest and Regis Jesuit, and also met regular 4A power Pueblo South, knew it would come in handy as it hits its weaker part of league schedule.

All told, the Rebels rolled to 468 yards of offense. The burly Trevonte Tasco rumbled to two rushing touchdowns, Marcus Lindsay ran for a touchdown and returned a fumble for another, and Isaiah Singleton threw for one.

Meanwhile, Golden (3-4,1-1), Colorado’s oldest high school (established in 1873), never got anything going and trailed in yardage at halftime by 243-48.
