Emergency responders worked on a natural gas leak in Grand Junction. Businesses in a strip mall and a few dozen nearby residents were evacuated as a safety precaution.

The incident unfolded about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when Xcel Energy workers called the Grand Junction Fire Department to assist with a gas leak in the area of North Avenue and North 25th Street, said Shawn Montgomery, a fire department spokesman.

People in the area were evacuated as Xcel workers focused in on the source of the leak.

About 20 firefighters and four engines responded to the area and were ready if needed. The leak did not spark and there were no injuries.

By 5 p.m. Xcel crews had pinpointed the source of the leak, a two-inch low-pressure natural gas line.

Repairs were expected to be complete by about 9 p.m., according to a Xcel spokesman.
