Big news, as in very large – Legacy is out of the Class 5A postseason.
Seriously, the Lightning, the defending state champion and winner of six of the past seven state titles, went down twice on Saturday and was shut out both times.
So Douglas County and Columbine (the No. 31 seed), which beat Legacy by a combined 15-0, are the qualifiers from Region 7.
There was almost another notable out. Third-seeded Dakota Ridge had to work to handle No. 30 Rampart in an opener.
Carlye Levy had a two-out, two-run single to tie it at 6 in the bottom of the seventh before MacKenzie Wilhelm had a sacrifice fly to left field to end it at 7-6 in the eighth.
And in a 4-1 decision of Chaparral, the Eagles made use of a solo home run by Wilhelm, a two-run triple by Dani Valerio and an RBI single by Melissa Mages.
The state tournament for all three classifications will be Friday and Saturday at the Aurora Sports Park.
