Interview with Kathy Pride, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: In March of 2013 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic bone cancer and given two months to live. Seeking treatment elsewhere, I had chemotherapy once a week for nine months, three biopsies (they determined breast cancer is where my cancer started) and three rounds of radiation. I’m still in treatment, but doing well. Because of my experiences with the trauma of losing all of my hair, I wanted to do something to encourage and inspire others who are going through the same things I did. So my husband, Garrett, and I opened Wigs and Beyond. We are located within Trendz Boutique, along with Unique Touch Skin Care, where we can provide a caring and fun atmosphere.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: First, my experiences allow me to come alongside our customers to not only offer a great product but also gain new friendships. Next, Garrett and I have exceptional integrity, and genuine affection for our clients, as well as all who are involved with Trendz Boutique. Also, if a woman is unable to leave her home or hospital, or maybe isn’t ready to go out, I will make every effort to go to her.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: The fact that I’m able to provide a loving and safe place to be. I also love to encourage people and, most of all, make them smile. God said that “a merry heart does good like medicine.” Sometimes we could have a customer, usually elderly, who never gets a hug from anyone. What a privilege it is to make them feel important and feel good.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: I think it’s impressing upon women that they are beautiful, even when they don’t feel very beautiful. I still remember when I looked like Beetlejuice. It took a lot of love to convince me I was still beautiful. Also, getting our story told so women could know there’s a place for them to go that is trustworthy and safe.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I was a music teacher and I loved to sing. Unfortunately, all the chemo I had took my singing voice away. I have three children, two sons-in-law, five grandsons, go to the gym three days a week to a cancer fit class and have the most loving husband possible. Now my husband and I own Wigs and Beyond. That in itself should give cancer patients hope and inspiration. Shoot, it gives me hope. I never thought I’d ever work again, but I am.
