Englewood police witnessed a wreck Thursday and chased down a driver who ditched a gun and tried to run away from the scene.

When officers caught the 26-year-old male, they found a significant amount of methamphetamine on him, according to a news release from the Englewood Police Department.

The early-afternoon wreck caused serious injuries to an 80-year-old who was driving another car, the news release said.

Police saw the 26-year-old speeding in his Nissan Altima along the 3000 block of South Platte River Drive and run a red light at West Dartmouth Avenue. The Altima slammed into a PT Cruiser, driven by the 80-year-old man.

The 26-year-old, whose name was not released, was treated at Swedish Medical Center for minor injuries before being booked into the Arapahoe County jail on numerous felony charges. He also had outstanding warrants, the news release said.

The 80-year-old was also admitted to Swedish Medical Center for his injuries.

Two women who were passengers in the Altima were treated at the same hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
