Authorities in Boulder County confirmed at least one person was killed when a small plane crashed near the municipal airport Monday morning.
Although officials have not released the identity of the pilot, the National Gay Pilots Association identified him in a Facebook post as its executive director, Steven Moore of Westminster, according to 7News.
The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. north of the airport just off Independence Road, officials said. Fire and law enforcement crews were on scene about 8 a.m.
Images from the scene showed the wreckage of a small, single-engine aircraft smoldering on the side of a road.
The plane hit the roadway propeller-first, caught fire, and came to rest in a ditch, said Cmdr. Jeff Hendry of the county sheriff’s office. The plane was taking off when it crashed.
