Eleven shooting range projects across Colorado are receiving funding from a $500,000 development grant, officials said.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced in a news release that funding from the Shooting Range Development Grant would go toward improvements and expansions at six existing shooting ranges, addressing safety issues at two ranges, developing two new facilities and repairing one damaged by the September 2013 floods.
“There is tremendous demand for new and expanded ranges in all parts of the state,” said CPW Shooting Range Program Coordinator Jim Guthrie.
The grant is funded with revenue from license sales and federal Hunter Education Program funds generated from sales of hunting and shooting equipment, the release said.
CPW said no tax dollars are involved.
Plans include $90,000 to go to the Common Point Shooting Range in Estes Park to repair range and access road damaged by the 2013 floods, $100,000 to the building of new ranges in Sterling and Leadville and $110,000 to the Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex in Colorado Springs for two new trap and skeet houses and improvements to electrical issues, parking and access roads.
“Some of these are probably in desperate need of updates,” said Manda Walters, spokeswoman for parks and wildlife.
The shooting range projects must be completed by December 2017, according to a CPW timeline.
