BOULDER — Colorado sophomore guard George King will redshirt for the 2014-15 season, CU men’s basketball coach Tad Boyle announced Wednesday during the school’s media day activities.

A Texan from San Antonio, King came off the bench in 27 games last season and averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds. He posted highs of 11 points against Arkansas State and seven rebounds against Jackson State.

Boyle said King has a potential to become a key contributor for the Buffaloes in the future and it is beneficial for both the team and King to hold back the springy, 6-foot-6, 220-pounder a season to even out the roster.

Colorado has four other sophomores: forward Wesley Gordon, guard Jaron Hopkins and swingmen Tre’Shaun Fletcher and Dustin Thomas.

By remaining a sophomore for 2015-16, King will become part of a three-member class with two current first-year players, guard Dominique Collier and forward Tory Miller.

“By redshirting, (King) might be trading a year where your minutes might be 10-15 a game, for a fifth year when, and I would expect George to be a starter, playing 30 minutes a game,” Boyle said.

Boyle said the only scenario that would prevent King from redshirting is if he were needed this season because of a rash of injuries on the roster.
