Larry Eustachy (Karl Gehring, Denver Post file)
Nice pickup by Colorado State men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy and his staff on the second day of the early signing period.
The Rams announced Thursday night that a junior-college power forward, 6-8, 210-pound Emmanuel Omogbo, had signed with CSU.
Omogbo averaged 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds last season for a powerhouse South Plains (Junior) College team in Levelland, Texas, just outside Lubbock. Despite those unimpressive stats, Omogbo was earned preseason third-team junior college All-America mention by The Sporting News, which speaks volumes to his potential.
I also like the fact that he is originally from Hyattsville, Md., in the hoops hotbed of metro Washington D.C.
Another good sign: Wichita State recruited him.
If the 6-8 Omogbo has the feet and skill set to be a true forward (rather than a center), he will present plenty of matchup problems in the Mountain West beginning next season.
Omogbo joined three high school seniors who signed with the Rams in Wednesday: guard Prentiss Nixon (Chicago area) and Anthony Bonner (Lawrence, Kan.), and forward/center Nico Carvacho (Dallas-Fort Worth area).
I continue to like what Eustachy is doing to piece together a program.
