Three years ago Darcy Jerman and Bianca Jones were roommates, adjusting to college life and unsure of what the future held for themselves and the University of Colorado women’s soccer program.

Friday, the senior co-captains will lead the Buffaloes (14-6-1) into the second round of the NCAA Tournament against the best program in the sport’s history, North Carolina (13-3-2).

“I don’t think either of us knew we would be in this position that we are today,” Jerman said. “I think we’re both really grateful and happy.”

Jerman and Jones have been cornerstones of the Buffs’ rebuilding project.

“They’ve done a great job and been great leaders for our team and have really pushed the program back in the right direction,” said CU coach Danny Sanchez. “Now we’re where we’re supposed to be, and a lot of that is because of those seniors.”

When Jerman and Jones were freshmen in 2011, the Buffs sputtered to a 4-13-2 record. It was CU’s worst season in 10 years and the program’s third consecutive losing campaign. After it was over, longtime coach Bill Hempen was let go.

After an 8-8-4 season in 2012, the Buffs went 14-7-2 last year, qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years and reached the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history (also in 2006).

Now the Buffs are one victory from another trip to the Sweet 16, even if that victory needs to come against the 21-time national champions.

“No one ever thinks we’re going to do well,” Jerman said. “We’re the underdog, but I like that.”
