Re: “RTD hosts public meetings on bus, rail fares,” Dec. 2 news story.
RTD has contracted with CH2M Hill to develop a new fare structure and pricing system. RTD’s website is currently soliciting opinions about a possible fare structure. Several suggested fare structures are provided. One possibility is a “single flat fare for rail service.”
The cost to use Taxis, Uber, Lyft, Car2Go, airlines and our own vehicles increases as we travel longer distances. It does not seem fair that a person traveling to downtown Denver from the 10th and Osage station would pay the same as a person originating at Lincoln Station in Douglas County. Smartcards and global positioning systems provide the technology for RTD to adopt a distance-based fare structure. Distance-based fares seem equitable.
