ATHENS, Ga. — The Colorado men’s basketball team has nine more road games this season, plus three more neutral-court games in Hawaii.
The way the first two road games have gone, coach Tad Boyle might be dreading those trips.
The Buffaloes were trounced on the road again Sunday, falling to Georgia 64-57.
“A lot of teams in college basketball are good at home and bad on the road, and we’re one of them,” Boyle said.
The Buffs are 5-0 at home and 0-2 on the road, and in each road game they fell far behind and struggled to be competitive. CU has lost four in a row away from Boulder, dating to last season.
“If we want to be an elite team, if we want to be a great team, we’ve got to learn to be a good road team and a good home team,” Boyle said. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to win every game on the road, but it means you’re going to compete for 40 minutes on the road, and we can’t even do that.”
Josh Scott had 18 points and 11 rebounds Sunday. Askia Booker added a game-high 20 points and five rebounds, but the Buffs couldn’t overcome a disastrous end to the first half.
CU’s Xavier Johnson made a 3-pointer with 4:09 left in the first half, tying the score 22-22.
Georgia (5-3) then closed the first half with a 12-0 run. Marcus Thornton scored four of his team-high 16 points in that stretch. The Bulldogs increased their run to 16-0 by scoring the first four points of the second half. In all, CU played more than seven minutes without scoring.
“It’s just lack of concentration,” Johnson said. “We just have to stay focused.”
