A former Colorado Springs band coach Tuesday was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and 30 days in jail for exchanging sexually explicit photos with a student.

David Hurd, 39, was a contract band coach at Air Academy and Liberty high schools. He was arrested in April after a school resource officer got a tip that he was having an inappropriate relationship.

On Sept. 16, he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child. More than 40 other counts of sexual exploitation and obscenity were dismissed, said prosecutor Susan Chadderdon.

The victim and her mother testified Tuesday that Hurd had approached the student during a vulnerable point in her life. He told her he struggled with similar issues and she was led to believe they had many things in common.
