Interview with Deborah Houk, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: My own experience with chronic pain led me to conclude that there is something lacking in our conventional healthcare system. They focused on my physical symptoms without regard to how constant pain was affecting my mental and emotional health. None of the conventional treatments that were offered relieved my pain. I looked for a different approach because I believe that true health includes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual vitality and balance. When chiropractic care relieved my pain, I went on to learn more about holistic health at Red Rocks Community College. Then I found Acutonics, which uses sound vibrations to release tension, stress and pain. I am particularly attuned to sound vibrations, so Acutonics was a natural fit for me. I wanted to offer the benefits of these soothing sounds to others.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Others who offer Acutonics do so as a side to another business such as acupuncture or massage. Because my primary focus is Acutonics, I am able to do more intense and thorough sessions. Since our bodies are about 70 percent water, sound vibrations (which travel well in water) are very effective in releasing blocks that cause tension, stress and pain, as well as a host of specific health concerns, such as boosting your immunity for winter. Acutonics uses tuning forks to create sound vibrations tailored to each issue. It is painless, noninvasive and relaxing. Acutonics contributes to that balance of physical, mental and emotional wellness which I believe is the foundation of health and happiness.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Meeting people and participating in their healing process. I get to see them change and become healthier and happier during a course of treatment. Not only does my client benefit, but I cannot help but absorb some of the sound vibrations during a session, which contributes to my own well-being.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Getting the word out. As a one-person business, I wear all the hats. I would rather be working with a client than doing the many behind-the-scenes tasks that are mandatory in running a business. Marketing is not my strong suit but it is essential.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: I first learned about Acutonics by attending a holistic health fair for horses. My horse loved it. When I discovered that I could learn how to use it on people, I knew I had found my calling.
