Wayne Sperling, left, arrives at court on Nov. 15, 2013, with his public defender. Sperling was sentenced to five years in prison for child abuse on Dec. 30. (Associated Press file)

Re: “5-year sentence closer to justice,” Dec. 31 editorial.

Your editorial regarding Wayne Sperling noted his five-year sentence is “a lot more appropriate than the 90 days in prison the boys’ mother … received.” Yes, thatap true, but you failed to note the institutionalized gender bias against males in the justice system. I can just about guarantee that if a male and a female both conspire to commit a crime and that crime is subsequently discovered, it is the male who will bear the brunt of any sentencing. You failed to ask why that is. It is nothing more than gender bias and it should be rooted out.

Women love to talk about being paid 75 cents for every dollar a man makes, but they never talk about jail sentencing. I can see why.
