Kyle Maclachlan will reprise his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper in the Showtime revival of “Twin Peaks,” the network announced today. The black-haired coffee aficianado will be back, slightly less black-haired, when the nine-episode limited series debuts on 2015. Series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce and Lynch will direct each episode.
Set in the same moody Washington woods but present day, the cult favorite that had us guessing about dancing dwarfs, funky dark secrets in a small town, who killed Laura Palmer and cherry pie, will return after 25 years. (It’s been so long I can’t find my clips; they must be on microfiche somewhere…) “Twin Peaks” might have been the first surreal puzzle of a TV series, before “Lost” dug into metaphysics and more recent dramas abandoned any hope of resolution. “Twin Peaks” brought tripiness to television, true weirdness to a traditional broadcast network, long before there were dozens of cable/satellite and streaming alternatives. How ABC in 1990 allowed the filmmaker behind “Blue Velvet” to construct an hour of primetime remains a mystery.
Good to know Maclachlan is on board, along with the creative team, to make this revival resonate. And good to know it’s billed as a limited series so Lynch and company don’t get lost in those woods.
