The Castle Rock Police Department is asking the community to be aware after an attempted sexual assault by a man driving a fake unmarked police car.
The incident happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The woman told police she was being followed by a car that had flashing red and blue lights. After pulling over, the woman told police, she was attacked by the driver.
The man is described by police as white, about 30 years old. He is about 6 feet tall, with a thin build, short dark hair and a mustache. He was wearing blue “tactical style” pants with a jacket, a blue cap and protective “shooting type” glasses with yellow lenses. He was carrying an old police Maglite flashlight.
The vehicle is described as an older, black Ford Crown Victoria. Spotlights were on both sides, and red and blue lights were on the sun visors. It had tinted windows.
Police offered tips: • Make sure you are pulled over by marked police vehicles, with the emergency lights built-in, rather than lights placed on top of the car temporarily.
• Stop in a well-lit area or location where lots of people are present. Turn on emergency flashers, but do not turn off your car.
• Drivers should lock their door when they stop and open their window only a few inches until confident the officer is legitimate.
• Drivers can call 911 from their cellphone, expressing concern to the dispatcher. If the dispatcher cannot confirm it’s a legitimate police officer, the driver should stay on the line and drive to a safe place, such as the local police department.
