A 24-year-old Arvada man this week was convicted of attempting to kill a police officer and four others in a wild series of events last January that ended after a high-speed chase.
A Jefferson County jury found Maksim Khamov guilty of 14 counts, including five counts of attempted extreme-indifference murder, the county district attorney’s office said.
Khamov’s friend Igor Skorev, 23, died in the incident.
The ordeal began after Khamov and Skorev argued at an Arvada bar, the DA said in a news release.
The two couples left in a car but realized Khamov, with Skorev in the passenger seat, was tailing them.
Skorev leaned out a window and fired gunshots at the couples’ car, flattening a tire.
Officers responding to a 911 call pursued Khamov at speeds up to 100 mph.
When officers tried to end the chase, Khamov drove directly at the them, ignoring their commands to stop.
Officers shot at the car, but Khamov continued to flee.
Police found Khamov’s car about 45 minutes later in a neighborhood. Skorev was dead in the front seat from a gunshot wound. Khamov was arrested.
Khamov faces dozens of years in prison at a March 9 sentencing.
