The Thursday morning commute in the metro area, especially on the west side, was slowed by stretches of roads and highways that were icy, slushy and snow-packed in spots.

The Wednesday evening commute out of Denver was longer than expected for most drivers, afternoon snowfall in the city lasted into the night, making roads extremely icy in spots.

Portions of Kipling Street and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Arvada were hampered at times by slide offs, fender benders and multiple car accidents.

Temperatures overnight dropped into single digits in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

On Thursday morning at about 5 a.m. Denver’s temperature was a frigid 6 degrees.

Police and emergency responders were busy Thursday morning in Denver and along the Front Range responding to multiple car accidents, including one in Lakewood in the southbound lanes of Kipling Street near the Federal Center. Lakewood police reported the accident at about 8 a.m. on its Twitter feed.

There were three separate accidents involving multiple vehicles on Sheridan Boulevard at West 6th Avenue, said Christine Downs, a Denver Police Department spokeswoman.

There were no reports of serious injuries in the accidents on Sheridan. Side streets remained icy and slushy in wide spread areas late into the morning.

Denver’s forecast, according to the weather service, calls for sunny skies Thursday with a high temperature near 40 degrees.

Thursday night in the city, skies should be mostly clear and the low temperature will drop to about 21 degrees.

Clouds will be increasing over Denver on Friday, the high temperature should top out at about 48 degrees.
