Secret Service officers search the south grounds of the White House in Washington on Monday after a hobbyist’s aerial was found there the previous night. (Susan Walsh, The Associated Press)

Re: “Small drone crashes at White House; hobbyist says itap his,” Jan. 27 news story.

Some may find it a humorous spectacle that a toy drone came over the White House fence, but the serious point is that the White House is indefensible.

We take pride that the historic residence of our president is not remote from the people and even welcomes tours and other public events, but it is only a few yards from foot and vehicle traffic. Present-day security is designed to keep out madmen, but it can’t even do that.

History has shown that it doesn’t take an evil genius to attack the White House.

It may be time to think about separating the presidentap family residence from his administrative offices. The White House could continue as a museum-like location for important ceremonial functions. A museum loses target attractiveness.

I’m confident that a more defensible location of the presidentap offices can be devised. It is high time for some serious thought about this issue. We’ve had enough warnings.
