After running the Four Winds Native American Center in Denver for more than 25 years, the Four Winds American Indian Council is becoming the official owner of the property.

At a meeting Saturday morning, the Rocky Mountain Synod Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America unanimously agreed to turn over the deed to the property, valued at $1,000,000.

Located at the intersection of West 5th Avenue and Bannock Street, the property has housed the Four Winds Native American Center for nearly three decades. Before that, it was used as a church and parsonage.

“The center is the heart of Native American community: culture, activism, healing, spirituality, recovery and daily life for urban American Indians in Denver,” said the Rev. Dr. Dena Williams in an e-mail. Williams has served as a liaison between Four Winds and the Rocky Mountain Synod Council for two and a half years.

“I am proud of my Native American and my Lutheran brothers and sisters for their commitment to truth, justice, reconciliation and peace,” she said.
