Authorities in Douglas County have identified a man accused of while driving twice the speed limit in a construction zone.
The sheriff’s office said the man ran away after the crash, attempting to open the doors of cars waiting in traffic in a failed effort to flee.
Roger Levito Trujillo, 34, faces 13 counts, including charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, criminal attempted aggravated robbery and criminal attempted aggravated motor vehicle theft, the county sheriff’s office said Wednesday in a news release.
Trujillo was spotted by a deputy driving a Ford Focus on U.S. 85 north of Castle Rock through a construction zone at about 2:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office says Trujillo was traveling about 70 mph in a 45 mph area.
The deputy activated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle just before Trujillo ran a red light at Meadows Parkway and was hit by an SUV. Trujillo then traveled over a median, striking a Douglas County School District bus, according to the release.
No students were on the bus when it was hit.
“After striking the bus, (Trujillo) fled on foot west across the highway and onto Meadows Parkway,” the release said. “He attempted to enter several vehicles that were at the stoplight.”
Trujillo failed to enter to one car when the driver sped off. He was able to enter another through the rear passenger door before the driver of that vehicle put him in a headlock.
Others quickly came to assistance of the driver and Trujillo was arrested thereafter.
Trujillo is being held at the Douglas County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
