When Cody McLeod scored at 2:54 of the first period and Matt Duchene followed with a goal at 3:03 against the Coyotes on Monday, it tied the franchise record for fastest two goals.
The previous two times Colorado scored goals just nine seconds apart happened Oct. 17, 1997, at Calgary, when defenseman Jon Klemm — yes, Jon Klemm — had both, at 12:15 and 12:24 of the first period; and Jan. 23, 2002, at Edmonton, when Adam Foote scored at 3:25 and Chris Drury followed at 3:34.
So this was the fastest two goals the Avalanche ever has scored outside of Alberta.
Trade winds. Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic and his Arizona counterpart, Don Maloney, sat together at the top of the Pepsi Center’s lower bowl Monday during Colorado’s morning skate.
Of course, they could have been talking about their reaction to Sunday’s night’s “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special or bemoaning the snowy conditions in Denver. Or even their on-ice encounters in the three seasons their NHL careers overlapped.
But, for the record, the NHL trading deadline is March 2.
Among the players the Coyotes could be willing to part with in a reset is defenseman Keith Yandle, 28, who has a season remaining on his five-year, $26.5 million contract.
Beard report. Two weeks into his beard experiment, Patrick Roy isn’t ready to give it up.
Earlier, the Avalanche coach joked that he would see how the team did in evaluating whether to keep it.
“I feel good about it,” Roy said Monday morning. “It’s different, isn’t it? I’m comfortable with it.”
Scratches. As expected, Daniel Briere and Stefan Elliott were the Avalanche’s healthy scratches Monday. Defensemen Brad Stuart (head and neck) and Jan Hejda, who were banged up in the final stages of Saturday’s win over Dallas, were ready to go and played.
Day off. The Avalanche is scheduled to have the day off Tuesday — from on-ice work and off-ice workouts — before closing out the homestand against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday.
