Maya Nelson’s hopes to place at state wrestling were dashed Friday afternoon.

The Denver East senior lost her first round Class 5A 120-pound consolation bracket match, losing a 4-2 decision to Mountain Vista junior Teigan Thomas-Trujillo at the Pepsi Center.

Nelson wrestled in her second state tournament. Last year, she became the first girl in state history to both qualify for big-school competition and win a match, advancing to the quarterfinals. This year, her goal was to become the first female to stand on the podium (top-six finish).

She finished her 2013-14 season with a record of 31-7.
