We have to hand it to Colorado’s U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman. Upon learning Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald had his military service, the Republican could have pounced. After all, the two had recently at a congressional hearing, a testy episode that drew considerable attention.
So, when news broke that McDonald last month embellished his military service, one might have expected gloating. Instead, Coffman chose the high road.
“The secretary’s misstatement was an error, but it doesn’t dim the fact that he served honorably,” Coffman said in a statement.
In an era when statesmanship is too often in short supply, Coffman’s response was refreshing.
