A man shot and killed by officers in northwest Colorado on Monday after authorities say he briefly took them hostage has been identified.
The 46-year-old man was James Brent Damon, authorities said.
Georgie Hand, 43, a woman who was with Damon, was arrested and is being held in Moffat County — where the shooting happened — on suspicion of several charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of disarming a peace officer.
Hand and Damon were wanted on nationwide extradition warrants out of Mississippi, officials said. The two were also wanted on warrants issued Feb. 11 in Chaffee County for crimes allegedly committed in January.
“Officer safety bulletins were (sent) out by the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office to all law enforcement agencies statewide and to surrounding states as well based on the suspects’ criminal histories and information received through the investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.
District wildlife manager Nathan Martinez and Moffat County Deputy Bhrent Shock were involved in the shooting at about 2:30 p.m. off U.S. 40 east of Dinosaur, roughly 10 miles from the Utah state line.
According to the 14th Judicial District attorney’s office, the two law officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle when they encountered a man and woman who briefly took them hostage.
During an ensuing struggle, Damon was shot and killed and Hand was taken into custody.
Neither law enforcement officer was injured.
Damon and Hand also were wanted in connection with a string of vehicle break-ins on Old Monarch Pass in Chaffee County between Jan. 25 and Jan. 31, the sheriff’s office there said. A $50,000 bond arrest warrant was issued Feb. 11 for Hand and Damon.
