will begin flying a larger Boeing 747-400 aircraft from Denver International Airport to London Heathrow starting Sunday. The change from the Boeing 777-200 will boost capacity to 337 passengers from 275 and add first-class seating.
British has flown nonstop to London since 1998. The airline used to fly to London Gatwick, which was DIA’s first daily, year-round transatlantic flight. In 2002, the airline switched to Heathrow.
DIA estimates that as of 2015, more than 2.5 million passengers had flown the Denver to London route.
According to a DIA analysis, the British Airways supports 1,300 jobs in Denver annually. Since 1998, the Denver-to-London flight has generated $694 million in wages and a total economic impact of more than $2.2 billion to the state’s economy, the airport said in a news release.
