Garrett Grayson is making a strong case to be the third quarterback selected in next month’s NFL draft. (Eliott Foust, AP via The Coloradoan)

Garrett Grayson remained in the margins last season. At least nationally. He didn’t make weekly appearances on ESPN or “SportsCenter.” But in the weeks following Colorado State’s successful season, the quarterback boasts a higher profile. He interviewed well at the NFL combine, maximizing his face-time with coaches and executives. He delivered a strong performance at his recent pro day, his previously injured hamstring completely healed.

Grayson’s ascension included a visit to Jon Gruden’s “Quarterback Camp” earlier this week. In a draft where Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are the top two quarterbacks, the waters will become murky after they are picked. Grayson has moved into the conversation as possibly the third quarterback selected ahead of Baylor’s Bryce Petty and UCLA’s Brett Hundley.

ESPN Mel Kiper remained bullish on Grayson’s draft prospects when I asked him this week.

“He’s third (among quarterbacks), either he or Petty. Grayson played in a pro style offense. He can play under center. He can go in a three, five or seven-step drop. He can come in and help you,” Kiper said. “He has enough mobility. Losing bothers him. He is a tremendous competitor. I think Grayson’s a second-rounder. I think it comes down to Petty or Grayson.”
