Fire crews in Weld County rescued several sheep from a barn blaze Thursday night in Mead.

The fire began at about 6 p.m. at a small barn on the 17200 block of Weld County Road 7.

Firefighters found a small barn engulfed in flames and noticed there were “many” sheep in danger from extreme heat and flames, according to a news release from Mountain View Fire Rescue.

“Neighbors worked with firefighters to move the sheep while firefighters used a chainsaw to cut the corral and free (a) final sheep,” the release said.

The coat of the last sheep freed was burned and discolored but animal was otherwise in good health, the release said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, officials said.

The building is considered a total loss and authorities are investigation the cause of the fire.
