Mesa, Ariz. — Monday was a Murphy’s Law kind of day for the Rockies.

What went wrong at Hohokam Stadium as the Rockies got pounded by the A’s? (Oakland led 11-2 after eight innings)

* Starter Eddie Butler, in line to join the starting rotation coming out of spring training, with right shoulder fatigue.

* Lefty Drew Pomeranz, the former Rockie, dominated his former team, throwing six shutout innings. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked just one.

“The strike zone was a little wide today,” said Rockies outfield Carlos Gonzalez. “But (Pomeranz) pitched well. His curveball was very effective today.”

* Closer LaTroy Hawkins got shelled. In one-third inning, Oakland rapped him for five hits, including a mammoth three-run homer to left by Brett Lawrie.

Hits

* Wilin Rosario, starting at first base, continues to hit. He doubled and scored a run in the seventh, scoring on a single by Nick Hundley.

* Adam Ottavino continues to be the Rockies’ best reliever this spring. He threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out three A’s.

Misses

* See above.

* Gonzalez misplayed a base hit by Ben Zobrist in the second, turning the play into a two-base error. CarGo said he had a bead on the ball but said the ball “changed directions.”

“It was on the ground coming right at me, but then, maybe it hit a rock or something,” he said. “The ball took a different angle and I didn’t even touch the ball. It’s one of those things. I catch that ball every day.”
