An Arapahoe County judge Tuesday sentenced Jemal Abdelkader Dawed, 39, Aurora, to 12 years in prison for the 2013 DUI vehicular homicide that killed an off-duty Littleton police officer.

Dawed’s car struck officer Kevin Wayne Denner on his 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle at the intersection of East Belleview Avenue and South DeGaulle Street in Aurora on May 6, 2013.

Dawed, traveling east on East Belleview, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and made a left turn directly in front of Denner.

The defendant never braked, ran over the victim and dragged him 21 feet away from the area of impact, according to police records. Denner died from severe head trauma.

After a four-day jury trial, the defendant was found guilty Jan. 16 of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, as well as reckless driving and failure to yield.

The crimes carry probation-eligible sentences. The defendant faced a maximum of 12 years and received it from Judge Donald W. Marshall Jr.
