A man who stole at least $20,000 from a 91-year-old woman he befriended after they met at a church was sentenced Monday to eight months in a jail work release program.

Florentine Guerrero, 66, was also sentenced to three years probation, according to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

He was convicted by a jury in January of theft from an at-risk victim.

Guerrero was caught after one of the victim’s sons noticed that a substantial amount of money was missing from her account and contacted the county sheriff’s office.

“He’d have her write checks to cash, then he’d endorse,” said Pam Russell, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office. “Or he’d take her to a bank where she would take out money for him. She had memory issues and at trial the jury heard that she suffered from moderate dementia.”

Authorities say Guerrero stole from the woman in 2013.

Prosecutors say they asked that Guerrero be sentenced to prison.
